I have two children – 4 and 3 years old. They are naturally very active. I have only been giving them Vitamin C. Do they need to take multivitamins as well?

Vitamin C and multivitamins provide the essentials in building up their immune system but do not help in coping up with their activeness. Overactive is due to the deficiency of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are found most abundant in human brain. AA helps in normal transmission of message among nerves and for the development of memory while DHA is needed for normal development of nerves cells and eye membranes. Oily fish do provides some DHA and AA but it may be insufficient. Therefore, supplementing your children with additional AA and DHA is recommended to achieve optimal neural and brain development to cope up with hyperactivity.

Indeed the best recommendation is infant multi-vitamin drop as 6-month-old is still too young to consume other supplements. In this case, you can probably search for a better infant formula that is fortified with more vitamins and mineral to boost up the immune system.

I am 175cm but weigh 75kg. I am now controlling my diet habits by skipping dinner. What kind of food supplements helps me to look good and healthy?

When you are skipping meals, you will feel lethargic and tired. I would recommend you to take some multivitamins so that you do not miss out on any nutrient. Actually, you need not skip meals at all. You can try cutting down on carbohydrate food e.g. rice, bread, etc. and go for a high protein diet. By dieting in such way, you can still look healthy and energetic. However, you can add on some supplements to speed up the process. Try taking chitosan that works naturally to prevent the absorbance of fat into the body; Cassia Nomame that works as a fat blocker or white kidney bean extract that reduce the absorption of starch.
My husband, 27, gets tired easily. I have no time to prepare him a nutritious breakfast. What are the best supplements, which are fast and easy for him to take?

You can try to purchase some meal replacement remedy for him to consume in the morning. These meals often provides enough nutrition and yet do not contain high fat. In long term, he may even able to cut down some weight and also cholesterol. One of the products that are highly recommended would be Glucerna. Besides that, he can also try taking some multivitamin with additional ginseng extract (e.g. pharmaton), which can provide vitality and energy. Besides that, he may also try Gingko as it promotes blood circulation around the body especially to the brain thus delivering more oxygen to the brain. This will increase concentration and energy.
My father, aged 53, gets headaches easily because he suffers from high blood pressure. Does he need food supplements?

First of all, I would suggest him to reconsult his doctor if the high blood pressure medicine is suitable for him. The medicine may not be able to control his pressure and he may need to switch to another drug. At this stage, I would not recommend him to take any food supplements. However, if the doctor reconfirm that his pressure is under control, he can consider supplementing with fish oil, which helps in reducing pressure.
My mother, 54, has high cholesterol problems. She is very careful with her food intakes, does she need food supplements?

In this scenario, we have to know her exact cholesterol level to determine what supplements she can take. If her cholesterol level is borderline high, she can consider taking red yeast rice, which act as a natural statin to reduce cholesterol level. This effectively reduces cholesterol level but is not recommended to take long term. Once the cholesterol level drops to acceptable level, she should maintain the level by taking fish oil. Fish oil of 1000mg can be taken twice daily for long term for maintenance purpose.

Your son may be suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Hyperactive is due to the deficiency of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are found most abundant in human brain. AA helps in normal transmission of message among nerves and for the development of memory while DHA is needed for normal development of nerves cells and eye membranes. Supplementing your children with additional AA and DHA is recommended to achieve optimal neural and brain development to cope up with hyperactivity.
My 8-year old daughter is a very focused person but she is not energetic and most of the time she falls asleep while doing her homework. I give her multivitamins but it does not seem to be working. What should I give her instead?

Instead of taking multivitamins, she can try taking B-complex. Vitamin B can help in coping up tiredness and stress thus increase vitality. However since she is still relatively young. She can go for half the dosage of an adult dosage. I would recommend Berocca, which is efferversant and drinkable with pleasant taste. Consume a lot of water while taking vitamin B.
I can’t stay awake later than 11:00pm at night. I try to finish my housework but I fall asleep because I am too tired. The next morning I try my best to wake up early but fail. In the office, I yawn day in and day out. I do take EPO and EPA. Is it enough to provide me with the energy I need for the whole day?

EPO and EPA do not provide you with energy. You can consider taking vitamin B, which can provide energy by coping up stress and tiredness. To stay focus and concentrated, you may consider Gingko biloba. Gingko is a traditional herb, which can promote blood circulation. With better circulation, oxygen is delivered more efficiently to whole body including the brain thus reducing fatigue and increase memory too. Another alternative is L-carnithine. L-carnithine is a natural enzyme in our body. It helps in converting the fatty acid in our body to metabolic energy thus you’ll feel more energetic and yet at the same time lose weight. All the above suggest supplements and vitamins must be consume in the morning. Taking it too late may cause insomnia.
I start my day early. I drink a glass of water and I am off for my morning walk. Is it advisable for me to have a beverage first? As we (my husband and I) are in our 50’s now, we always get out of bed in the morning still feeling tired, having body aches here and there. Are we lacking in nutrition and food supplements? We are loosing our appetites too. Sometimes we just do not feel like having our normal meals. Would food supplement help to improve this? Do we need food supplements to stay healthy and energetic, and to look younger and cheerful always?

Yes indeed it’s advisable to have a light beverage before you go for you morning walk. You can even go for some light cereal with milk.

Feeling tired and having body aches in the morning may result from a bad posture or uncomfortable condition while sleeping. Getting quality sleep is important to give the energy you required for the day work. Check on your mattress and pillow if they are at good condition. You can also get some therapeutic pillow from the pharmacy.

If you do not have appetite for normal meal, you may consider some meal replacement product that is available in the market. One of the best brands in the market is Glucerna. These product can provide you with the proper tailored nutrition, which at times will be even better than taking normal meals. Alternatively, try-taking vitamin B. Vitamin B is an energy booster and also appetite booster. It will enhance your appetite and thus reduce tiredness too.
