Understanding SINUS PROBLEMS
- Sinus problems occur when the air-filled spaces in the bones behind the nose and above the eyes become inflamed, swollen and blocked.
- Most common in people over the age of 20 years, when the sinuses become fully developed.
Signs and symptoms
- Blocked nose and sinuses (congestion).
- Persistent pain, and swelling in the sinus areas behind the nose or above the eyes.
- Lying down or bending forward often worsens the pain.
- If untreated, it will increase the risk of bacteria infection of the sinuses. Symptoms include:
Causes of sinus problems
- Viral infection e.g. common cold
- Allergy e.g. pollen, dust mites, moulds and animals
- Dental infection spreading into the sinuses
- Atmospheric pressure changes, air travel or underwater swimming
- Sinus obstruction or structural problems of the nose
- Irritation by physical factors e.g. air pollution, drugs, chemicals, food and stress.
Self care
- Consult a pharmacist/doctor for medicine to help manage the symptoms of sinus.
- See a doctor if the symptoms persist for > 7-10days after trying self care.
- Drink lots of fluid to keep the nasal discharge thin
- Do not blow your nose too hard as this will worsen the condition by forcing the mucous up into the sinuses.
- Avoid irritants or allergens that commonly cause sinus problems
- Limit the use of nasal decongestant spray/drops for not more than 7 days.
- Other treatments – steam inhalation, aromatherapy.
