Understanding MENOPAUSE?

  • Means the cessation of menstrual cycle and it marks the end of a woman’s fertile years
  • Average onset age: 51 years (it can range from 45-60yrs)
  • The drop in hormone levels that occur during this time can cause many changes in a woman’s body.

Signs and symptoms

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flushes, night sweat
  • Dryness and itching in the vagina
  • Dizziness, rapid beating of the heart
  • Frequent desire to pass urine
  • Itching skin
  • Emotional changes – loss of confidence, anxiety, irritability, difficulty in sleeping, reduced interest in sex and tiredness

Risk of MENOPAUSE

The falls in the hormone levels may lead to:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Urine leaks when sneezing, coughing or on sudden exertion.
  • Increased risk of heart disease

Self care

  • Have blood pressure and cholesterol level checked regularly
  • Have routine pap smear and mammograms
  • Stop smoking
  • Vaginal lubricant may make intercourse more comfortable- ask a pharmacist
  • Exercise can help to maintain strength of the muscles and healthy bones.
  • Healthy eating – dairy products are a good source of calcium. Reduce salt, alcohol and caffeine intake.
  • Weight reduction is necessary for obese individuals as it reduces the strain on your hips and knees

Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • May be used to relieve symptoms of menopause
  • Normally only needed for short term until the symptoms disappear
  • Women who are on long term HRT and wish to stop/ change to other therapy should do so gradually under their doctor’s advice
  • Available in different forms – tablets, patches, cream/ gels
