Dandruff

What is DANDRUFF?
Is a common scalp conditionc caused by too much shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp

Is not dangerous, does not cause balding and is not contagious

Is a natural process and cannot be eliminated or cured

Can be effectively managed and controlled with the right treatment and self care.

Symptoms
Unsightly flakes or scales are typically present on the scalp and trapped in the hair.

Can appear as an overly dry scalp with small, round white to grey scales on top of the head, with itch.

Some may appear yellow in colour and are waxy or greasy.

Causes of Dandruff
 Fungal infection

Overactive oil glands can cause an increase of the natural skin shedding process

Clogged oil glands can lead to over-drying and flaking of the skin

 Hereditary

 Hormonal changes

 Bad hygienic habits

 Excessive perspiration

 Bad diet

Excessive use of hair sprays and gels

Too frequent use of hair-colouring and electric curlers.

 Long-term stress, anxiety and tension

 Allergy or hypersensitivity

Treatment
Dandruff can disappear suddenly without treatment or may take many weeks of treatment to improve.

Self care is the most important steps to prevent and effectively treat dandruff.

Topical- Ask our pharmacist for the best choice for you

Selenium sulphide - has been shown to be effective and work by reducing the cell turnover rate

 Anti-fungal shampoo (ketoconazole)

Coal tar – is the least effective among all antidandruff agents

Self care
Shampoo daily with a mild, non-medicated shampoo

The scalp should be massaged gently to loosen flakes followed by thorough rinsing.

Avoid using hair sprays and other products which contain alcohol, which tend to dry out on the scalp.

Ask our pharmacist for anti-dandruff shampoos and lotions

 Talk to our doctor if:

o Your scalp is red, itches, bleeds or has a burning
sensation or if any of these conditions migrate onto
       your face

o The flaking skin is isolated in one area or multiple        areas as the condition may be a skin problem other
       than dandruff

o There are patches of hair loss

Supplements
oral

Evening Primrose Oil & Fish Oil (Biolife Evening Primrose Oil & Fish Oil, Blackmores Evening Primrose Oil & Fish Oil) – contain essential fatty acids, which are required for the oil balance of the scalp. Essential fatty acids are essential for energy production, particularly of skin and hair

Vitamin B Complex (Blackmores Executive B, Biolife Executive B Complex) – may help to relieve stress. Look for a formula containing biotin
